Operation Smile is deeply committed to being the best steward of your gifts. We value the trust you place in our work and our ability to optimize resources and direct funds to programs that will help us care for children suffering from facial deformities. Donor gifts send medical professionals to the children who need them. They also help us teach and train healthcare professionals and build awareness of the plight of these children and the need for volunteers and resources. Gifts also allow us to administer our programs and raise more funds.
The cost of these overhead expenses as the dominant measure of our performance is a misconception that doesn’t ring true. In the U.S., three leading sources of information about charities encourage donors to consider the big picture rather than the overhead myth.
Beyond financial donations, contributed services and gifts-in-kind are tremendously helpful and have a great impact on our financial stewardship. How? The less we have to pay for these services and products, the more we can place toward the care of patients and effective medical programs. It’s that simple. All of our practices seek to demonstrate the highest standard of accountability, effectiveness and efficiency. In recognition of our meeting the high ethical standards of the nonprofit community and complying with generally accepted standards for management and public disclosure, the Direct Marketing Association’s Nonprofit Federation awarded Operation Smile the Non-Profit of the Year award in 2008.
